Wildlife Discipline Lead. This position offers a high degree of flexibility and autonomy and provides meaningful opportunities for both personal and professional development. Salary: $95,000 - $142,000, plus health benefits, annual performance bonus, personal allowance days, RRSP matching, overtime (x1.5)
Role Scope:
Deliver High-Quality, Defensible Wildlife Work:
- Lead end-to-end delivery of wildlife projects across sectors such as energy, mining, infrastructure, and government.
- Produce and oversee technically rigorous, regulator-ready reports, assessments, and mitigation strategies that withstand scrutiny.
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and with strong client satisfaction.
- Provide senior technical oversight across wildlife programs including species at risk, monitoring programs, and habitat management.
Build and Lead a High-Performing Team:
- Directly mentor and develop a team of approximately 5–7 staff, including junior and intermediate professionals.
- Build confidence and capability in team members, improving technical output and independence over time.
- Establish clear expectations, provide regular feedback, and create a culture of accountability and support.
- Contribute to resourcing, workload planning, and team growth strategy.
Drive Project and Financial Performance:
- Manage projects from proposal through execution to final delivery, including budgeting, scheduling, and invoicing.
- Maintain strong project margins through effective planning, delegation, and oversight.
- Identify and resolve risks early to prevent scope, schedule, or cost overruns.
Grow Client Relationships and Contribute to Business Development:
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with clients across industry, government, and NGOs.
- Identify new opportunities and contribute to proposals, scopes, and pricing.
- Bring an entrepreneurial mindset, actively helping grow the wildlife practice rather than relying solely on existing workstreams.
Strengthen and Evolve the Wildlife Discipline:
- Establish and continuously improve technical standards, best practices, and workflows.
- Contribute to the strategic direction of the discipline, including identifying new service areas or niche expertise.
- Collaborate across disciplines (aquatics, vegetation, regulatory, geospatial) to support integrated project delivery.
Maintain Select Technical and Field Engagement:
- Stay connected to the work through targeted involvement in complex projects and occasional field programs.
- Ensure field programs are executed safely, efficiently, and to a high technical standard.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of experience in environmental consulting, with strong exposure to wildlife assessments, monitoring, and regulatory processes.
- Demonstrated success leading projects from proposal through delivery.
- Proven ability to mentor and lead teams in a consulting environment.
- Strong technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, defensible deliverables.
- Experience working with clients, regulators, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field.
- Registered, or eligible for registration, as a Professional Biologist (R.P.Bio., P.Biol., or equivalent).
- Operates with an ownership mindset, taking accountability for outcomes rather than tasks.
- Comfortable in a smaller, agile consultancy over a large, highly structured firm.
- Balances technical depth with commercial awareness.
- Invested in developing people, not just delivering projects.
