Senior Wildlife Biologist

Prince George, Smithers, Northern BC, BC

My client is a 100% employee-owned Canadian environmental consulting firm with an impressive legacy of three decades in operation. The firm operates across Western and Northern Canada, with multiple strategically located offices serving regional and national clients. They emphasize science-driven, client-focused environmental solutions, built on collaboration and long-term relationships.

My client is looking for a Senior Wildlife Biologist. This role is ideal for a biologist who combines strong technical expertise in wildlife biology with project leadership and regulatory experience. The successful candidate will design wildlife studies, lead field programs, interpret ecological data, and deliver regulatory-ready technical reports while mentoring junior staff and advising clients on wildlife and habitat management.

The position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of projects across sectors such as mining, energy, transportation, infrastructure, and land development, while collaborating with multidisciplinary environmental teams.

Remote / WFH / Hybrid: Hybrid (Prince George or Smithers, BC)

Travel: 10%

Salary: $100k - $145k DOE, plus health benefits, RRSP matching, annual performance bonuses and annual company bonuses (Final salary will reflect each candidate’s qualifications, relevant experience, expertise, and professional designations, as well as the overall value they bring to the role.)

Role Scope:
Wildlife Baseline Programs Designed and Implemented - Design and lead wildlife baseline programs that support environmental assessments and regulatory approvals.
  • Designing and implementing wildlife inventory programs and wildlife habitat assessments
  • Leading field programs including species-specific surveys and habitat studies
  • Overseeing data collection protocols and ensuring data quality
  • Interpreting wildlife data and identifying ecological trends relevant to project development
Wildlife Impact Assessments and Mitigation Strategies Developed - Evaluate potential project impacts to wildlife and wildlife habitat and develop practical mitigation strategies.
  • Assessing project impacts on terrestrial wildlife and species at risk
  • Developing mitigation and monitoring plans aligned with regulatory requirements
  • Contributing wildlife expertise to environmental assessments and permitting applications
  • Advising project teams on wildlife habitat protection and regulatory compliance
Regulatory-Ready Wildlife Technical Deliverables Produced - Prepare and review high-quality wildlife technical reports that support permitting and environmental approvals.
  • Preparing wildlife baseline reports, technical memoranda, and environmental assessment sections
  • Reviewing and providing senior technical sign-off on wildlife deliverables
  • Ensuring documentation meets provincial and federal regulatory requirements
  • Supporting project teams with defensible technical interpretation
Wildlife Discipline Leadership on Environmental Projects - Serve as the wildlife lead on multidisciplinary environmental projects.
  • Coordinating wildlife components within larger environmental programs
  • Managing project schedules, budgets, and technical scope
  • Supporting proposal development and project planning
  • Collaborating with specialists in aquatics, vegetation, hydrology, and regulatory disciplines
Mentorship and Technical Development of Junior Staff - Provide leadership and mentorship to junior and intermediate biologists.
  • Supervising field teams and providing guidance on survey methods
  • Supporting technical development in data interpretation and report writing
  • Reviewing work products and ensuring technical excellence
  • Promoting a strong culture of safety and scientific rigor
Client Engagement and Business Development Support - Maintain strong relationships with clients and regulators while contributing to the growth of the wildlife practice.
  • Acting as a technical advisor to clients on wildlife and habitat management
  • Participating in regulatory and stakeholder discussions
  • Supporting proposal preparation and project planning
  • Identifying opportunities for continued client support
Requirements:
  • BSc or MSc in wildlife biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline
  • 8+ years of professional experience in wildlife biology, ideally within environmental consulting
  • Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) or eligibility
  • Strong experience designing and leading wildlife inventory and habitat survey programs
  • Experience preparing technical wildlife reports and environmental assessment deliverables
  • Knowledge of provincial and federal wildlife regulations and permitting processes
  • Experience managing field teams and coordinating multidisciplinary environmental projects
  • Strong communication, analytical, and project management skills
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork in remote environments when required
