Water Modelling Specialist.
The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise in hydrology, water quality modeling, and software tools such as GoldSim and other water resource modeling platforms. This role involves developing and implementing water balance models, performing data analysis, and providing technical expertise to support environmental assessments and regulatory approvals.
Remote / WFH / Hybrid: 100% Remote anywhere in the US (or Canada)
Salary: $85k - $110k CAD, with benefits, RRSP matching, annual bonus (The final salary will be determined based on qualifications, relevant experience, expertise, and professional designations. Candidates who exceed these requirements or bring additional value to the team may receive a salary outside the specified range.)
Travel: Open to travel within the US and Canada but not extensive.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Water Modelling and Data Sciences Lead and Water Stewardship Practice Lead in a team environment.
- Develop site-wide and catchment-scale water balance and water quality models (GoldSim experience required) for environmental assessments, scenario analyses, and water management and treatment planning.
- Contribute to surface water components of resource projects, including baseline studies, effects assessments, water management plans, and compliance monitoring reports.
- Create clear and engaging presentations to communicate modeling results using data visualization tools or coding.
- Prepare high-quality technical reports to support regulatory and permit management requirements.
- Stay informed about changes in federal, state and provincial impact assessment legislation relevant to water practices.
- Ensure project deliverables meet scope, budget, and schedule expectations while maintaining high-quality standards.
- Assist in preparing work plans and proposals, including defining scopes and developing cost estimates.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in water resources projects with a modeling focus, preferably in consulting or the natural resource sector.
- Professional designation or eligibility for registration.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or natural sciences (earth or environmental science); a Master’s degree is an asset.
- Proficiency with industry-standard water balance and mass balance modeling software (e.g., GoldSim) for mining projects.
- Experience modeling environmental processes related to the fate and transport of constituents of concern (e.g., climate, hydrology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, water quality).
- Strong data analysis and statistical skills for large environmental datasets, including visualization tools (e.g., Power BI).
- Programming proficiency (e.g., R, Python, C, VBA) for water modeling applications and software development.
- Excellent analytical, report writing, and spreadsheet management skills to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Experience using AI tools to enhance modeling and data analysis efficiency.
- Effective time management, adaptability, and resource allocation skills.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and critical thinking abilities.
- Understanding of mining and its environmental effects.
- Willingness to occasionally travel and conduct fieldwork as required.
Additional skills considered an asset:
- Experience with water resources modeling platforms (e.g., HEC-HMS, Raven, HEC-RAS) and water quality/geochemical modeling tools (e.g., PHREEQC).
- Proficiency with GIS software (e.g., ESRI ArcGIS, Global Mapper, QGIS).
- Familiarity with 2D and 3D data visualization tools.
- Experience in the mining or natural resource sectors.
- Background in water quality management for resource projects (e.g., mining, oil and gas, renewable energy).
- Ability to effectively communicate water-related technical study results to stakeholders, regulators, and technical review teams.
- Understanding of environmental impact assessment regulations related to water quality.
- Project management experience.
